Parkland College engages the community in learning with First Year Communities.

Our First Year Communities support first year college students with similar goals by:

  • Creating stronger networking and bonding between students to enhance motivation and the create conditions for individual student success.
  • Enhancing support for students through social activities, advising and integration of coursework.
  • Producing opportunities for teamwork and collaborative learning.
  • Guiding students to explore career options realistically while shaping their first year of college around academic planning and success.

Our communities:
Business
This community provides a supportive learning network for business students in ENG 099 (writing) and CCS 099 (reading). Parkland College’s Business Student First Year Community can combine these two courses into ONE course, with readings that focus on course content from BUS 101, Introduction to Business. Students only pay for 4 credit hours instead of 6 by taking this integrated course.

Criminal Justice
This community is for students ready to take ENG 099 (writing) and CCS 099 (reading). Parkland College’s Criminal Justice Student First Year Community can combine these two courses into ONE course, with readings that focus on course content from CJS 101, Introduction to Criminal Justice. Students only pay for 4 credit hours instead of 6 by taking this integrated course.

Health Professions
In the HP First Year Community, students take both ENG 099 (writing) and CCS 099 (reading) as ONE linked course, with course work that focuses on health-preparatory science topics. Assignments from this class prepare students for required courses such as BIO 121 and CHEM 106.
As a part of this community, students learn and grow in courses with the same group of students. Note: Students joining this community are strongly encouraged to register for PSY 109 in fall.

Together We Achieve (TWA)

TWA is a First Year Community designed to address the needs and interests of African-American male first-year students at Parkland College. This community provides support in reading and writing, and centers on Dr. Willie Fowler’s dynamic American Government class. As part of TWA, students support each other in courses and enjoy opportunities to participate in cookouts, movie nights, and lunches. Peer mentoring and lots of academic support are built into this unique learning opportunity.

We want your students to succeed in college and in life. Please contact Pam Lau for more information at 217/373-3709 or email plau@parkland.edu today.
