U.S. Artists to Connect with "Locale" in Photography Exhibition

Accomplished photographers from across the country will offer unique perceptions and interpretations of specific places, in a group exhibition opening Monday, Nov. 12 at Giertz Gallery at Parkland College.
 
"Locale," curated by Chicago photographer and educator Christopher Schneberger, will run through Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019. The exhibit is part of Giertz Gallery's annual "State of the Art" national art invitationals.
 
In conjunction with the exhibit, an opening reception honoring the photographers is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will feature a curatorial talk by Schneberger at 6:30 p.m. Two additional gallery lectures by the exhibiting artists will be held in conjunction with the exhibition: 

  • Jason Reblando, Tuesday, Nov. 27, 6:15 p.m.

  • Jon Horvath, Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 1:15 p.m.

 An adjunct professor of photography at Columbia College and the College of DuPage, Schneberger has shown internationally including recent exhibitions in the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles, Dorsky Projects in New York, Geocarto International in Hong Kong, the 3D Center for Art and Photography in Portland, and Printworks Gallery in Chicago, where he is represented.
 
He explained that localities in which an artist resides inevitably make an impact on his or her art. Working within the realm of documentary and art photography, each artist in this Giertz Gallery exhibit reveals his or her viewpoint on a specific place in which something complex or mundane, carefree, consigned, or fraught has occurred, may have occurred, or has the potential to occur.
 
"The spirit of a place resides in the buildings, the streets, and certainly its people—both present and past," Schneberger said. "Often, a place has a feel, a taste, a frequency which can be tuned in. To visit a place, to reside within it, to explore it, and absorb its spirit, allows the artist to reflect and respond. The artists in this exhibition have all spent time in specific places, or types of places, and responded to what they experienced. They tuned in to the frequency, and the resonance of that wave echoes through their art."
 
Exhibit participants comprise a mix of studio artists and faculty at several U.S. educational institutions, including Christine Carr, assistant professor of art and visual culture at Iowa State University; Antone Dolezal, a photographer based in Tulsa, Okla.; Jon Horvath, interim associate professor in the New Studio Practice program at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design; Dave Jordano, a professional fine art photographer based in Chicago; Jason Reblando, photographer/videographer and photography instructor at Illinois Wesleyan University; Lara Shipley, assistant professor of photography at Michigan State University; and Samantha VanDeman, assistant professor of photography at McNeese State University, Lake Charles, La. 
 
Schneberger has received two Illinois Arts Council individual artist grants. He is a founding member of Perspective Gallery, a non-profit gallery of photography in Evanston, Ill., where he also serves on the Board of Directors. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Florida and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University.
 
Giertz Gallery Director Lisa Costello said the photography exhibition will offer art students an opportunity to learn more about the options available to them as photographers and will provide an educational experience for community members interested in photography. Most importantly, the exhibit will allow audiences of all types the chance to explore diverse viewpoints on our complex and multilayered world.
 
Giertz Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday. The gallery will be closed from 5 p.m. Nov. 21 through Nov. 25 for Thanksgiving break; Dec. 10 through Jan. 13 for winter break; and Jan. 21 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
 
To find the gallery when classes are in session, we suggest using the M6 parking lot on the north corner of the campus. Enter through any door and follow the ramps uphill to the highest point of the first floor, where the gallery is located. The gallery windows overlook the outdoor fountain area.

Students, please come dressed as you are to the next Employer Campus Visit Day, Nov. 14, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the South Lounge.  Individaul students AND classes are encouraged to attend! Why dress casual?

This is not a job fair! It's a chance to practice professional communication skills and learn about career tracks within specific companies/industries. The event is limited to 10 employers; they may have current openings, but they will also be available to answer questions you may have about their company/industry.

You can practice professional communication skills, learn about career tracks within specific companies/industries, and apply for part-time or full-time job openings.

How do you approach an employer?

First, consider your body language. Take a deep breath, try to relax, and smile! A  positive attitude goes a long way.

How do I start the conversation?

Sample questions you may want to ask are:

  • What entry level positions in (enter your career field) are available in your company and what kinds of people are you looking for to fill them?
  • What types of people do well within your organization?
  • What are the key skills you are looking for in new hires?
  • What degrees or programs of study are most desirable within your company?
  • What types of experiences are most valuable to you when hiring (leadership, research, volunteering, etc)?
  • What part-time or internship opportunities does your company/organization offer?

When we think of healthcare, we think of doctors and nurses. Anyone who has had routine dental care might also include the dental hygienist. As a profession, respiratory care remains one of the best kept secrets in healthcare. Why?

Breathing is so fundamental, we often take it for granted, that's why. However, for the patient with a chronic lung condition such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, or pulmonary fibrosis, breathing requires conscious effort and often dictates the day's activities. In fact, most of the students coming into Parkland College's Respiratory Care program either needed a respiratory therapist, or met a respiratory therapist through a family member who needed a respiratory therapist!

The Parkland College Respiratory Care program prepares future respiratory therapists to provide patient assessment, diagnostic testing, a variety of respiratory treatments, patient education, and life support with mechanical ventilation for patients of all ages. The respiratory therapist is at the bedside in the emergency department, in the critical care units, on the medical and surgical units, in the home, and in the physician's office. The respiratory therapist will care for patients of all ages, from the neonate born too soon to the oldest of the old. The care they provide may be life-sustaining or may provide symptom relief and comfort.

Respiratory care doesn't have to remain a secret.

Parkland College Shows "Clean" Fiscal Health in Audit

Trustees receive external audit, fall enrollment, tax savings reports

Parkland College's financial fitness has again received top marks in the school's external audit. 

On Wednesday, Parkland College's Board of Trustees officially accepted the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) from Martin Hood, LLC. The report presents the college with an unqualified "clean" opinion of its FY 2018 financial statements, the best type to receive from independent review. The audit highlights the college's exemplary fiscal management and includes reports on Parkland's schedule of expenditures of federal awards and its internal control over financial reporting and compliance.

Also at their regular meeting, the trustees heard reports on fall enrollment and on the tax savings homeowners will receive due to bond refinancing.
 
The board received the fall enrollment update from Dean of Enrollment Management Kristin Smigielski. Smigielski noted the number of high school students taking advantage of Parkland courses continues to increase, with a 21.61 percent increase in early college enrollment through dual credit, Early College and Career Academy (ECCA), and the new Early Transfer Academy (ETA). While fall 2018 headcount decreased by 1.19 percent, the college's enrollment decline overall has slowed and diversity of the student population continues to increase. 

Chief Financial Officer Christopher Randles also reminded trustees that the college has completed its bond refinancing, and the result will be a projected 2.18 percent decrease in the college's taxpayer burden. The college will also set the levy for tax year 2018 in November. 

The Trustees also approved a program-specific reduction-in-force of a full-time faculty member effective in academic year 2019-2020. 

In other business Wednesday, trustees approved the following:

  • the purchase of white paper from Veritiv Operating Co. of Morton, Ill., for $24,480
  • emergency expense for the D-wing elevator for Kone, Inc. of Peoria, $54,138
  • new boiler system for the Child Development Center from Reliable Mechanical Co. of Champaign, $45,340
  • purchase of Kaplan Test Prep's Integrated Testing Program and NCLEX-RN Review Course for its Practical Nursing program, up to $23,850 
  • personnel appointments:
    • Krystal Garrett, Assistant to the President and the Board of Trustees; Garrett will fill the position vacated by Nancy Willamon on Feb. 1, 2019.
    • Beth Burdette, Purchasing Agent, Business Office
    • J. Maurine Sterrett, Financial Aid Assistant, Financial Aid and Veteran Services
