English as a Second Language Classes
A TOEFL score is not required for students who wish to take ESL classes.
Regular Academic Classes
To be eligible for regular academic classes (courses above the 100 level), nonnative English-speakers must meet one of the following requirements:
* Paper-based TOEFL score of 500 or higher
* Internet-based TOEFL score of 61 or higher
* Parkland's ESL COMPASS score of 240 or higher with a minimum 80 subscore in each section (Only students who have been admitted to Parkland can take this test.) and writing assessment.
Some classes also require placement into ESL 101, which is equivalent to ENG 101 and is designed specifically for non-native English speakers. This placement requirement is met by taking Parkland's Writing Sample. Additionally, some classes require math placement. This requirement is met by taking Parkland's Math Assessment. Only students who are eligible for regular academic classes can take the Writing Sample and/or Math Assessment.
