English as a Second Language Classes
Neither TOEFL or IELTS score is required for students who wish to take ESL classes.
Students will take the CaMLA ESL Assessment for placement in ESL courses.
Regular Academic Classes
To be eligible for regular academic classes (courses above the 100 level), nonnative English-speakers must meet one of the following requirements:
* Paper-based TOEFL score of 500 or higher and a Writing Sample Assessment score of 3
* Internet-based TOEFL score of 61 or higher and a Writing Sample Assessment score of 3
* IELTS band score of 6 or higher and a Writing Sample Assessment score of 3
* For students who have been admitted to Parkland: CaMLA ESL Assessment score of 69 or higher and a Writing
Sample Assessment score of 3.
Some classes also require placement into ESL 101, which is equivalent to ENG 101 and is designed specifically for non-native English speakers. This placement requirement is met by taking the Parkland College Writing Sample. Additionally, some classes require math placement. This requirement is met by taking the Parkland College Math Assessment. Only students who are eligible for regular academic classes can take the Writing Sample and/or Math Assessment.
