Innovation Celebration to be held at Parkland

Outstanding residents, organizations, corporations to be honored at 13th annual event

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The 13th annual Innovation Celebration will be held Thursday, March 29, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Parkland College’s Student Union, 2400 W. Bradley Avenue, Champaign.

The Innovation Celebration recognizes community individuals, organizations, and corporations that have made significant contributions, taken risks, and provided leadership to ensure the continuing economic success of Champaign County, the ongoing success of the University of Illinois' economic development mission, and the growth of entrepreneurial talent and energy in our community.

This event is not merely an award for accomplishment, but a benchmark of success for the nominees and those selected to receive this prestigious award. Innovation Celebration is hosted by the Champaign County Economic Development Corporation in partnership with the University of Illinois, Parkland College, and community sponsors.

The William M. Staerkel Planetarium will conduct two interactive Merit Badge workshops for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts this spring. Advance registration is required.

Girl Scout Naturalist Sky Badge workshops run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on either April 17 or April 25. You only need to attend one session. Cost is $4 per Scout; leaders are free. 

Boy Scout Astronomy Merit Badge workshops run from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on either May 15 or May 23. You only need to attend one session. Cost is $5 per Scout; leaders are free.

College for Kids Registration Underway

Two-week sessions for kids ages 8–13: June 18-28 and July 9-19

Registration begins Feb. 16 for Parkland College's summer enrichment program for elementary and middle school students, College for Kids.
 
The popular two-week sessions for youth ages 8–13 cover a variety of subjects including technology, computer science, math, science, visual and performing arts, language arts, and humanities. Students learn something new, explore interests, and discover new hobbies in a supervised and comfortable environment. 
 
Registrations are accepted on a first come, first served basis. Parents and guardians have until June 4 to register their children for the first of two CFK sessions offered this year, which will be held June 18–28. Session two, which takes place July 9–19, has a June 25 registration deadline.

CFK classes meet Monday through Thursday from 12:45 to 2:45 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. The cost is $159 per class.

Living Tree Ceremony

Honor someone you love with a living gift

The Parkland College Foundation will host its annual Living Tree program on Arbor Day, Friday, April 27. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the Child Development Center on the Parkland campus.
 
Several trees will be planted in Parkland's Memorial Grove, along with small plaques bearing honorees' names, to memorialize loved ones or bestow special honors.
 
The foundation is asking residents to honor the memory of loved ones with this "living gift." Contributions of $500 or more to the Parkland College Foundation will be used to purchase a tree with a small plaque of remembrance. Petition to Graduate Deadlines Announced

Complete a Petition to Graduate to receive the academic credential you have earned

For students earning academic degrees and certificates by the close of Parkland College Spring Semester 2018, the college has announced the following Petition to Graduate deadlines:

  • Deadline to petition for spring and summer graduation (to participate in Commencement ceremony): March 6

  • Deadline to petition for spring graduation (not participating in Commencement ceremony): April 6

  • Deadline for summer graduation petitions: July 19

Students who plan to graduate must complete and submit a Petition to Graduate to Admissions and Records, room U214. Parkland College Commencement 2018 has been scheduled for Thursday, May 17, at 8 p.m. at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Urbana.
