Giertz Gallery to Showcase 2025 Art and Design Faculty Exhibition

The exhibition opens Monday, August 18

The Giertz Gallery at Parkland College proudly presents the 2025 Art and Design Faculty Exhibition, featuring the work of faculty artists, including one retiring in the 2025–26 academic year.

This annual showcase, opening Monday, August 18, features paintings, drawings, ceramics, metalsmithing, photography, and video. Exhibiting faculty members include Bryan Heaton, Travis Keller, Paula McCarty, Melinda McIntosh, Josh Schutz, Denise Seif, Peg Shaw, and Matthew Watt.

A reception is free and open to the public on Thursday, August 21, from 5:30–7 p.m. Dr. Isabel Scarborough, chair of Arts, Media, and Social Sciences at Parkland, will give opening remarks at 6:15 p.m. followed by a gallery talk with Shaw, who teaches photography and video. She is retiring in Spring 2026.

An Oak Park, Illinois native, Shaw received her Master of Fine Arts in photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from UIUC. Her work has been exhibited nationally, including solo exhibitions in Chicago and New York, and has won numerous awards in both photography and video, including those from the Illinois Arts Council and Arts Midwest/NEA Regional.

During her tenure at Parkland, she received an Illinois Community College Trustees Association Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Award and a 40 North Artist Ace Award from the Champaign County Arts Council. She also curated several group exhibitions at the Giertz Gallery, including "Shift" in 2013 and "Flaw" in 2024.

She identifies as a multimedia artist "who works with photography, video, sound, and writing, as well as mixed media such as paint, charcoal, dirt, leaves, thorns, petals, eggshells, hair, thread, wings, wire, and glass. The layered elements have both a conceptual and physical presence."

Fall gallery hours are Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday, noon to 3 p.m. The gallery will be closed Monday, September 1, for Labor Day. The exhibition will close on Saturday, September 27.

To find the gallery, use the M6 parking lot on the north corner of the Parkland College campus. Enter through door X-7, turn left, and follow the ramps uphill to the highest point of the first floor to find the gallery. The gallery windows overlook the outdoor fountain area.

The Giertz Gallery acknowledges support from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. All events in the accessible gallery are free and open to the public.
