Staerkel Planetarium to Offer Spanish Shows January 21

"Un cielo, un mundo" y "Astronomía a gran escala"

The Staerkel Planetarium at Parkland College will be offering public Spanish-language shows in the dome on January 21.

On that Saturday at 1 p.m., the planetarium will present "Un cielo, un mundo: La aventura de Big Bird", a Sesame Street show that offers an introduction to the night sky and takes a trip to the Moon with Big Bird, Elmo, and Hu Hu Zhu. Funded by a PNC Foundation grant, the show was produced by the Adler Planetarium, Sesame Workshop, the Beijing Planetarium, and Liberty Science Center.

The show "Astronomía a gran escala: personas, lugares, descubrimientos" begins at 2 pm. This fulldome video shows why Chile is home to many world-class observatories and highlights the people who work on these instruments. The show presenter, Dr. Ricardo Covarrubias,  teaches astronomy at Parkland College and grew up near many of the telescopes in Chile. Covarrubias will also show what can be found in the night sky during winter.

Tickets to the shows are $6 for adults and $5 for children, students, and seniors. Email planetarium@parkland.edu or call 217/351-2568 to book a private show in English or in Spanish.
