Summer Start 2023 an early college and career exploration experience for high school students

Earn while you explore and grow!

Summer Start 2023 is designed to prepare low-income, first-generation-college, and minority high school students for successful passage to college and career. This FREE experience will be held 9 am – 4 pm Monday through Thursday from June 7 – July 13.

Deadline to apply is May 1.

It's your opportunity to...

  • Build college and career readiness skills
  • Get one-on-one academic tutoring as needed
  • Connect with other students and meet friends

Orientation will include attendance at a digital literacy workshop, where you will receive a laptop and learn how to effectively use the tool for your educational success.

Your daily schedule includes...

  • Breakfast
  • First Year Experience (FYE 101) hybrid class (in-person portion; two college credits available for course completion). This course focuses on goal setting, educational and career planning, time management, study skills, and financial and personal development.
  • Tutoring or skill assessment (based on need). Academic support staff will work with you to build foundational skills in math, reading, and writing.
  • Lunch
  • Small-group career exploration in approximately 17 areas including Art, Radio, Television, Automotive, Construction, Electronics, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, EMT, Occupational Therapy, Aviation, Drones, and Forensic Accounting.
  • Academic success advising (various times)

For Parents and Guardians:

  • Students will be encouraged to support one another through the cohort model.
  • Students will be expected to write a short reflection journal every two weeks that focuses on what they are learning and what new opportunities they are interested in. They will need to submit their reflection journal before receiving the stipend for the past two weeks' attendance. 
  • MTD vouchers available for students needing help getting to campus.
