Courses Offered

The composition program offers ENG 101 (Composition I), ENG 102 (Composition II), and ENG 106 (Accelerated Composition) to students at Parkland. The program also offers equivalent courses for non-native speakers: ESL 101 (Composition for Non-Native Speakers I) and ESL 102 (Composition for Non-Native Speakers II); these courses are taught by faculty experienced in working with the particular learning needs of non-native English speakers. Most degree-seeking students need to take both ENG/ESL 101 and ENG 102/ESL102 or ENG106.

ENG 106 is an accelerated composition course, which combines ENG 101 and ENG 102 in one semester. Students need to be placed into ENG 106 to take this course by achieving an ACT English score of 25 or higher and an ACT reading score of 25 or higher, or an SAT writing score of 570 or higher.

We offer a variety of ENG 101 options: regular ENG 101 (3-credit-hour course), Blended ENG 101 (4- credit-hour course), Jump Start ENG 101 (4-credit-hour course), and special topics ENG 101 (3-credit- hour course). For details, check out the course descriptions page.

We offer two kinds of ENG 102, liberal arts ENG 102 and career-oriented ENG 102. Career-oriented sections of ENG 102 are a good choice for students who plan careers in business, technical, and scientific fields, as well as some other careers such as law enforcement and health professions. Liberal arts sections of ENG 102 are a good choice for students majoring in humanities, arts, and social science fields, especially those who plan to complete bachelor’s degrees, and perhaps continue on to graduate or professional school.
