Practical Nursing Certificate

What you’ll do:
The Practical Nursing certificate program* at Parkland prepares you for entry-level work as a Licensed Practical Nurse upon completion of the program and the appropriate state board examination. You'll study in a newly renovated 20,000 sq. foot facility featuring a simulated hospital and clinical area as well as a state-of-the-art Human Simulator. Classrooms are spacious and designed to be multifunctional. The faculty in the PN program are professionals dedicated to promoting the success of a diverse student population. Complete the PN program in 9-12 months of full-time study (once admitted to the program). Program completion does not guarantee licensure.

After successfully completing the PN program, you may apply to sit for the State Board Examination or NCLEX-PN. There are some conditions that may disqualify a student from state licensure; additionally, a background check may be required by clinical community partners  upon submission of your application for licensure. If you are uncertain about your ability to pass a background check, contact the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation at 213/814-4500.

Where you’ll go:
Practical Nurses will continue to find employment opportunities in long-term care settings, home health, community agencies, clinics and some regional hospitals. Practical nursing also serves as a "stepping-stone" for those who desire to work in health care yet, due to circumstances, may not have the time or financial resources to enter directly into an Associate Degree Nursing program.
Parkland PN graduates enjoy a high rate of success as noted through program completion and NCLEX-PN exam scores.
