PROF Scholars

Melissa Berry Pearson, PhD

1st PROF scholar (taught full time at Parkland January 2000-May 2001)
Lecturer in English at Northeastern University
Because of the PROF program, I have not only embraced college teaching and higher education as my career and culture, but I have absolutely found a disciplinary calling that I truly love.
M.C. Neal
PROF scholar
Master’s student at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
PROF validated the importance of continuing my higher education endeavors. Aside from the monetary assistance lessening the financial strain of tuition, PROF affords me the opportunity to instill in Parkland students the same invaluable skill set Parkland professors ingrained in me.

Miranda M. Rowland

PROF scholar, Director of Choral Activities at PBL Junior High and High School.
Without the PROF program, I may not have had the ability to attend my school of choice, nor would I ever have earned my master’s degree. The program encouraged me to strive beyond my dreams and to create my own success.

Richard Sumitro
PROF Scholar., Master's in Mathematics from Illinois State University, May 2017
The Parkland PROF scholar program has given me an opportunity to fulfill my lifelong dream, teaching in higher education, and the courage to excel and see what I am capable of doing.

Tameka Johnson-Tillman
PROF scholar
Instructor of English, Lincoln Land Community College
Becoming a PROF scholar has made me a more understanding teacher, and only through Parkland’s devotion to students was I allowed this opportunity.

The PROF Scholarship was established in 1997 by the late Karen M. Keener, who joined the English faculty at Parkland College in 1970 and was chair of the Humanities Department when she retired in 2000. Professor Keener was a strong proponent of diversifying our faculty.
