Affinity Groups

Affinity Groups

Home  :  About Us  :  Affinity Groups
Affinity Group = a group of people with a common ideology, a shared concern for an issue, or a common activity, role, or skill.

Parkland’s Affinity Groups are voluntary, employee-initiated networks that allow faculty and staff who share common interests to connect and provide support for each other. Some of our groups are associated with professional organizations. All groups are open for attendance and welcome any new members. Current affinity groups include:
  • Ally Team
The Parkland Ally Team exists to facilitate education and advocacy on campus about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues, with the goal of fostering a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all employees and students at Parkland College. Allies include both LGBT people and straight supporters, and members come from all of Parkland’s departments, units, and programs.
  • American Association for Women in Community Colleges
The Parkland College Chapter of the AAWCC is dedicated to encouraging professional development, supporting women in leadership roles, developing communications, and promoting or offering workshops for women in community colleges. A membership fee is required.
  • Bowling Group
This employee recreational bowling league meets for fun, but its members do keep scores! About 10-12 teams of 3 bowlers each meet every other Thursday or Friday. A bowling fee is required.
  • Christian Email Group
This resource group consists of Christians who pray for others as requests are forwarded and who are encouraged to pass on those requests to others. No questions are asked about practice or beliefs.
  • LGBT Network
This group is for self-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender staff and faculty at Parkland College. Originally organized as a social outlet for its members, the Network’s focus has expanded to include involvement in community events and programs, dual membership with the Parkland College Ally Team, and creating awareness of LGBT/social justice issues.
  • Men’s Breakfast Group
A social network of men who work at Parkland, this group meets for breakfast on the fourth Tuesday of the month.
  • Movie Night
Movie Night is a group of employees who enjoy going out to movies with friends. The Movie Night group meets at the movies twice a month for fun and films. Employee friends and family are also welcome to attend.
  • PayDay Lunch
This group of Parkland people get together on (or near) payday for lunch..."because we always have money on payday!" Come and enjoy good friends and food.
  • Parkland Trotters
Join the Parkland Trotters and walk for the health of it! By keeping record of miles walked around campus, you can lower your blood pressure, strengthen your heart and bones, reduce your cholesterol, and increase your metabolism.
  • Ujima
Ujima is a group formed to encourage, support, and inspire African-American faculty and staff. Anyone interested in concerns affecting African American faculty and staff, as well as other faculty and staff of color, can join. The group shares strategies on how the college can encourage greater diversity among its ranks as well as shares about networking opportunities/events in the C-U area.

New affinity groups are welcomed and encouraged. For more Group information, visit my.parkland or call Human Resources at 217/351-2220.
