When an entire family embodies the compassion to save lives and keep others healthy, obtaining the credentials it needs to carry out this mission seems the obvious next step. For the Lievano family, Parkland College formed the crucial bridge between the spirit and skill of lifesaving.

Although nearly two decades separate their Parkland training, paramedics Jim Lievano (‘92) and son Paul (‘09) both praise Emergency Medical Services instructor Mary Butzow for her “down-to-earth” yet professional teaching style. “She has the knack to take theory and convert it into applicable information that can be used in real life,” said Jim, who is also a Champaign Fire Department lieutenant. Paul, now in Colorado, added that Butzow “takes the time to make sure that her students understand every concept that she teaches, and she will spend extra time outside of class to help out.”

With her Parkland Massage Therapy certificate in hand, Betty Lievano (’08) began running her own client care business from home, providing therapeutic pain/stress relief to many. “I’m helping people cope with stress, a major contributor to the serious illnesses we have today,” she said. “I enjoyed my experience at Parkland, which delivered quality instructors and individual attention in a setting where learning was fun. The instruction in its Massage Therapy program goes above and beyond what is required to pass the national exam.”

Speaking of coping with stress, newly trained ER nurse Stephanie Lievano will likely need some of her mom’s services in the future to do just that. Stephanie is using her 2008 AS degree in nursing from Parkland to serve as an RN at Provena Covenant Medical Center’s emergency room in Champaign, gladly offering “hope to people in times where they would otherwise feel hopeless.”

“Nursing is a very complex and rewarding career with great responsibility,” Stephanie said. “The Nursing program at Parkland helped build my character; I couldn’t be a nurse today without the wealth of knowledge, challenges, and support from many of my instructors.”

Since a family of lifesavers is bound to cross paths as it fulfills its mission, Stephanie soon discovered another (happily) unexpected reward to nursing—working with her father. Stephanie jokes, “Whenever he brings patients into our ER, I get to be my dad’s ‘boss’! But I would never hesitate to take his advice. He, too, has been a great instructor.”
