Title: Instructor, Mass Communication
Fine and Applied Arts
BA, Valparaiso University
MA, Eastern Illinois University
Friendly and understanding are the perfect words to describe Fine and Applied Arts instructor Kendra McClure. Her kind personality gives students the confidence to come to her office and ask for help. She teaches many classes at Parkland, including Introduction to Mass Communication, Mass Media and Society, Introduction to Advertising, Introduction to Public Relations, and Basic Broadcast Announcing. Kendra loves to study and debate about mass communication because everyone has an opinion about it; because it touches so many aspects of our lives; and especially because of media’s influential role in U.S. culture.
In her free time, Kendra enjoys gardening, crocheting, home canning, and making bread. You might find her enjoying sweet potatoes fries at the Courier Café, a favorite place to dine. Inspired by “students who show up to class every day ready to learn and work hard to reach their goals,” she advises students that “success comes to those who work hard for it. Don’t wait for it to come to you, go after it. Be resourceful and take advantage of opportunities available to you.” Perhaps that’s why one of Kendra’s favorite quotes, by Bon Jovi, is “Map out your future, but do it in pencil.”
