Dental Hygiene
Department: Health Professions
Strong interpersonal skills, good manual dexterity, and a genuine interest
in people are necessary prerequisites for this rewarding career. As a dental
hygienist, you will serve an important role as an oral health educator
and as a provider of preventive and therapeutic treatment.
Some of your responsibilities as part of the dental health team include scaling
and polishing teeth, taking X-rays, applying fluoride and surface sealants,
and teaching patients how to care for their teeth.
You’ll train and practice your skills on campus in Parkland’s state-of-the-art
Dental Hygiene Clinic. You’ll complete your observations off campus at
the Champaign-Urbana Public Health Clinic, Veteran’s Administration Hospital,
Champaign County Nursing Home, and private dental offices.
As a full-time student, you can earn the A.A.S. degree in two years, including
summers. A recommended option is enrolling in the pre-dental hygiene program
of study to complete general and supportive courses before entering the program.
