Helping students grow and develop is what gives Tom Caulfield the greatest joy in his present position as director of Student Life at Parkland College, where he’s served since 1998. Part of that student growth and development includes participation in service learning/volunteerism, which Tom happily works to provide students each year through “Alternative Spring Break” community service events. Through ASB, Parkland students have been able to “give back” across the U.S. and abroad—from New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina to Africa (donating computers) to the local Boys & Girls Club.
Parkland’s “family atmosphere” makes it easy for Tom to stay dedicated, but he says it is his college son Christopher who inspires him to be his very best. Despite being born deaf, Christopher received a merit and presidential scholarship for college and is a source of inspiration to dozens of children with severe disabilities through his years of service at a local children’s care center. Christopher’s life story was covered by ESPN.
If not enjoying Chicago sports teams, performing his own community volunteer work, or inventing something (a hidden talent), you might find Tom enjoying the sights in California, a favorite vacation spot. The Northbrook native with four college degrees has one important message for students: “Treat others how they would like to be treated.”
