Frequently Asked Questions

What do I report?
Anything that worries you (for example, erratic or disruptive behavior, drug and/or alcohol abuse, disturbing writings, talk of suicide) might prompt you to make a report. If you are not sure if a report is warranted, or would like to discuss the best course of action, please contact a member of the BIT. Behaviors of concern might be observed in a number of settings: in the classroom, at a service location or office, at an on-campus job, during participation at an extracurricular activity, or in the community.

How do I make a report?
To report a concern to the BIT, please complete the Person of Concern form. The form asks you to describe the incident(s) observed that concern you. BIT members can be contacted personally if you wish to discuss your concerns before submitting a report.

Will I be contacted if I submit a concern?
At times, the BIT needs additional information, so the report form requests contact information. Anonymous reports, however, also can be submitted. Interventions by BIT members typically involve handling of confidential information, so those filing reports will not necessarily know the resolution of a situation. If you continue to have concerns about the situation, please contact a member of the BIT.

What happens when a report is made?
Once the BIT receives a report, the team discusses the reported concerns, creates a plan to monitor and/or intervene with the person of concern, and designates a contact person to implement the plan. Updates are given at each BIT meeting about cases that have not been resolved.

How do I report a concern after standard business hours?
Reports can be made after hours by submitting the online form or by sending an email to a BIT member. IN AN EMERGENCY, HOWEVER, CONTACT PUBLIC SAFETY IMMEDIATELY AT  911 or 217.351.2369.

Should faculty/staff complete a Documentation of Student Behavior form or make a report to the BIT?
If an individual’s behaviors cause others or the educational process to suffer, there very likely is a violation of the Student Conduct Code or a Parkland College policy. In these situations, if the individual is a student, the Documentation of Student Behavior form should be completed. If the behaviors suggest that the individual may be suffering, or could be a danger to self or others, a report should be filed with the BIT.

What policies/procedures exist to address behaviors of concern?
Parkland College’s Policies and Procedures Manual is available online at or through the my.parkland portal under Personnel Resources. The Student Policies and Procedures Manual is included as Appendix B and is available online. Any form of harassment or discrimination based on race, color, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, age, disability, veteran or marital status is prohibited in all areas of the college. The Manual contains policies addressing harassment for employees (3.01) and for students (8.26). Any form of retaliation for filing a complaint is also expressly forbidden. The policy regarding workplace violence (1.06.04) prohibits acts of intimidation as well as actual or threatened violence against anyone anywhere on Parkland’s campus.
