The Parkland College Volleyball team invites the public to a noteworthy event with Champaign-Urbana Special Recreation, taking place during its 6 p.m. match against Lincoln College on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
CUSR Volleyball team players will join the Cobras in a featured halftime match at which the Cobras will present a special donation to help CUSR with funding and activities for the next year. Parkland's volleyball team holds camps and high school tournaments during the summer to raise funds for a number of activities; the Sept. 4 donation is one of the activities the team felt passionate about using the funds for this year, said Head Coach Cliff Hastings.
The Cobras began working with CUSR Volleyball teams in 2011 with a practice and expanded its partnership in 2012 by hosting two practices and featuring them in a home match. The CUSR Volleyball group features two teams, one with a traditional ball and a second with a modified ball. Last year's home match "was a fantastic event that not only gave the CUSR athletes a ton of excitement and fun, but it helped foster many conversations over the following weeks about the CUSR athletes and what a great group of people they are," Hastings said.
"I was also proud that it showcased something other than the volleyball skills of our team; it illustrated the warmth and passion that the Parkland volleyball players had garnered for the CUSR athletes as well," he said.
CUSR later awarded Parkland Volleyball with its 2012 CUSR Friend of the Year Award, given annually to a community member or organization that supports and promotes CUSR participants and programs.
