In one of the most surprising upsets in Region 24 golf history, the Cobra Golf team held on to beat national power John A Logan to advance to the National tournament as a team for the first time since 2009. Parkland was led by medalist Lyle Burns who won going away firing a 54-hole total of 217 (72-71-74), beating the 2nd place finisher by eight strokes. With the Cobras leading by just two strokes going to the final hole, Burns punctuated the win by chipping in for a birdie to seal the Cobras trip to Nationals.
The Volunteers, the #1 ranked team in the final NJCAA poll, struggled over the first two rounds and the Cobras capitalized, grabbing the lead and taking a five-stroke advantage into the final round. Logan was on their game Monday, firing a 298, but the Cobras were right behind shooting 300. In addition to Burns 74, Nick Berger fired a 73, Joe Powell a 76, and Austin Egbers a 77 for a total team victory. Berger finished 6th over-all while Powell placed 8th, earning both All-Region honors along with Burns.
The win was unexpected by everyone but the Cobras since Logan had made 7 straight trips to Nationals, placing in the top 3 five consecutive years including two National titles. But this time, it was the Cobras turn for success as they edged the Volunteers 916-919, giving Coach Zach McNabney his second team trip to Nationals. His first team placed 8th in 2009 in Scotsboro, Alabama. This year's event will be closer to home as the Cobras will head to the Indiana National Golf Club at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Indiana. The tourney will take place May 20-23.
Congratulations to Region 24 Coach of the Year Zach McNabney, Region 24 Player of the Year Lyle Burns, All-Region honorees Nick Berger and Joe Powell, and all of the Cobras on an outstanding tournament and accomplishment.
