Local Real Estate Leader Named Entrepreneur of the Year

JSM Living co-founder Jeff Hartman to receive honor during June 20 fundraiser for school's entrepreneurial program

Thursday, March 30, 2017
The Parkland College Foundation recently announced its selection of area real estate investor and manager Jeff Hartman as its 2017 Entrepreneur of the Year. Jeff Hartman

Hartman co-founded the JSM companies along with his brothers, Stephen and Michael. Their collaboration started in the early 1950s after their father, Lyon Hartman, formed his own construction company. Later, as Lyon Hartman began building apartment buildings, his sons started their own companies to do the same. In 1974, the brothers formed JSM Management to manage their increasing portfolio of apartments, office buildings, and retail strip centers.
Hartman will receive the V. Dale Cozad Entrepreneur of the Year Award during Parkland's eighth annual Entrepreneur of the Year Banquet, an annual fundraiser for the Parkland College Entrepreneurial Program, on Tuesday, June 20, at the I Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign. SuperValu is the presenting sponsor of the event.

Hartman attended Southern Illinois University, Parkland College, and the University of Illinois, studying business. Today, JSM's company portfolio includes 386,000 square feet of space leased to 91 businesses, including national chains such as McDonalds, Panera, Panda Express, Urban Outfitters, Subway Sandwiches, Sherwin Williams, Chipotle, Caffe Bene, Federal Express, Starbucks, and the University of Illinois. JSM Apartments, the families' core business, has increased to more than 1,600 campus-area apartments.
Hartman has been active in such not-for-profit organizations as Campustown 2000, the Don Moyers Boys and Girls Club, Mayo Clinic Foundation, and the University of Illinois Foundation. He and wife Sarah have been married for 36 years and have three children and five grandchildren.

The Parkland College Entrepreneurial Program is the result of a partnership between the college and community members committed to developing strong, educated leaders for today's workforce. The program provides scholarships to students demonstrating potential for growth as future managers, leaders, and innovators, for immediate entry into District 505 industries and companies. Ultimately, the Entrepreneurial Program aims to increase the number of graduates with a strong work ethic and commitment to excellence that supports existing industry, creating a more attractive community to future employers.
