Trustees Approve Budget, Hear Technology, Enrollment Reports

Top-level reports given at regular monthly meeting Wednesday

The Parkland College Board of Trustees approved the fiscal year 2018 budget and heard top-level technology and enrollment reports during its regular monthly meeting Wednesday.

President Tom Ramage opened meeting business with his monthly report, which included an award presentation to Dr. Pam Lau from the National Council of Instructional Administrators.

Amin Kassem, Parkland's chief information officer, presented on the school’s Technology Master Plan. His report summarized high-level initiatives and services underway to support teaching and learning, help with retention and persistence, increase enrollment and improve communication and collaboration across campus.

Julie Marlatt, dean of enrollment management, and Stephanie Stuart, director of marketing and public relations, provided a strategic enrollment management update focused specifically on the work of the college’s Recruitment Council to boost international and online enrollment.

Vice President for Institutional Advancement Seamus Reilly then summarized the latest news reports on state and national legislation affecting community colleges.

The trustees adopted the fiscal year 2018 budget which, due to the passage of a state budget in July, shows revenues exceeding expenditures by approximately $1.8 million. Chief Financial Officer Chris Randles first presented the tentative budget in July, and the budget was on display for public review and input starting Aug. 1.

The Board of Trustees also approved the following items Wednesday:
  • $2 million in Protection, Health and Safety (PHS) plans for parking lot improvements in lots M2 and M3 and theatre ramp improvements
  • $33,000 contract with Clarus Corporation for market research services to inform the strategic marketing plan
  • Accepted $1.6 million in grants from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Facilitating Coordination in Agriculture Education (FCAE) project and the Ameren Illinois Retro-Commissioning program
  • Two personnel appointments:
    • Danielle Wilberg, associate director of annual fund and alumni Relations, Parkland Foundation
    • Eric Quintanilla, marketing and digital content manager, Marketing and Public Relations, Institutional Advancement
