Faculty, Staff Excellence Winners, 2014

Four employees honored with campus, regional, national annual awards

To honor their superior employee service excellence, three Parkland College faculty members and one staff member earned campus, regional, and national organizational honors for 2014, nominated through Parkland’s Professional Development Subcommittees for Faculty and Staff.

Charles Larenas, Social Sciences
2014 Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Award - Illinois Community College Trustees Association
 • "Inspiring" Associate Professor of Education
 • Advisor for Parkland’s Club Latino
 • Former chair, Latino Outreach Advisory Committee
 • Member, Illinois Community College Board Latino Advisory Committee
 • Member, Parkland Academy Team, which recently was awarded funding to implement a program designed to increase the persistence of Latino students at Parkland
• Received federal grant funding for last five years to direct a program designed to support the special educational needs of migratory children in Illinois
Kristina Engberg, Fine and Applied Arts
2014 Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Award for Parkland - Illinois Community College Trustees Association
• "Enthusiastic" Music Instructor 
• Past president and vice president, National Society of Arts and Letters (Central Illinois Chapter)
• A leader in online and hybrid course design/redesign in her discipline 
• Designed and taught online and hybrid courses for dual credit high school students and returning adult students
• Rehearsal pianist for the Parkland Theatre; music director and accompanist for the University of Illinois Summer Studio Theatre; composer for a local middle school ensemble
Peg Boyce, Health Professions
2014 Parkland Teaching Excellence Award (Conference: National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development)
• Associate Professor and Co-director of Parkland’s Dental Hygiene program
• Graduate of Parkland College with 26+ years of teaching in her discipline/profession
• Board member, SmileHealthy, a local not-for profit dental organization serving low-income residents  
• Organized regional/international service learning trips providing care for underserved populations in Tennessee, New Orleans, India, and Guatemal
• Organizes and facilitates a Faculty Learning Series for full- and part-time faculty in the program 
Beth Chepan, Office of Admissions and Records
Parkland Outstanding Staff Award (Gold - six or more service years)
• Admissions Advisor, praised for her "indefatigable positive and can-do attitude" and "consistently friendly, professional, and generous" approach to tasks/situations
• Has served as the face of Parkland for district high school and middle school students
• Creates/coordinates programs for district schools including “Countdown to Parkland,” inviting students to visit campus and participate in presentations and department tours 
• Memberships: Parkland Academy Team, Latino/Latina Outreach Committee, Enrollment Management Team (co-leader for Goal 3), American Association of Women in Community Colleges (membership coordinator)
