"Trade Up 2017" Set for April 28

Annual career day introduces middle-school youth to possible future careers

Tuesday, March 28, 2017
Parkland College will welcome more than 200 middle school students from Champaign, Ford, Piatt and Douglas counties at a trade-focused career day April 28.

"Trade-Up 2017" will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the college's Parkhill Applied Technology Center. Parkland is hosting the event in conjunction with the Education for Employment System #330 K-12 vocational cooperative and the East Central Illinois Building and Construction Trades Council. This is the fifth year this event has been held at the Parkhill ATC.

Students will view demonstrations and participate in hands-on stations hosted by representatives from local skilled trades unions and Parkland College's Agriculture/Engineering Science and Technologies department. Past stations have included bricklaying, plumbing, automotive repair, CAD, surveying, machining/industrial technology, carpentry and more.

"We're leveraging K-12, post-secondary, and private sector resources to prepare area students for their future careers," said Nick Elder, director of the Early College and Career Academy, housed at Parkland.
