Cobra Golf team 2014 M-WAC Champions!

The Cobras won the rain shortened title rallying from 3rd place and a four stroke deficit after the opening day, to edge out runner-up Lewis and Clark by two strokes and defending champion Illinois Central by six.

The tournament was originally scheduled for 36 holes on Sunday and 18 more on Monday at Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin, but two rain delays cut the Sunday total to 27 and the coaches agreed to wrap up the Monday round with just 9 more holes due to the cold and windy conditions which saw the wind chill hovering near 30 degrees.

The Cobras posted a (313-155-159 627) to edge Lewis and Clark (312-152-165 629) for the title. The Blazers, who have never won the M-WAC golf title, lead after the first round by 1 over PC, and by two over ICC after the 2nd round. ICC (316-150-1567 633) slipped back to 3rd after winning the title the past two seasons.

Parkland's rally was paced by sophomore Lyle Burns who shot 37 on Monday, good enough to earn him 2nd place. Burns 37 was the only score to break 40 on the final day. He fell just two shots short of winning medalist honors as Lewis and Clark's Lewis Bain carded a 148 to Burns 150. Rounding out the top 5 were Jake Schneider of ICC and Cam Crouthers of Lewis and Clark (152), and Reid Cagle of Lincoln (154). Those five earned 1st Team All-Conference recognition. A pair of Cobras earned 2nd team honors as Austin Egbers (156) and Nick Berger (158) finished 6th and 7th respectively. Jack Niebrugge (165) and Joe Powell (171) rounded out the Cobra scoring.

The golf title is the 4th M-WAC title won by a Parkland team so far in the 2013-14 school year following on the heals of titles won by Men's Soccer and Volleyball in the Fall and Women's Basketball in the Winter. It is also Coach Zach McNabney's third conference championship in his six years at the helm of the Cobras.
