Human Trafficking Summit

Thu, May 15, 2014 starting at 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis to host event to raise awareness; Room D244

U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) will host a summit on human trafficking from 10–11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 15, in Room D244 at Parkland. This event is free and open to the public.

“Human trafficking is a $9 billion a year industry that affects more than 20 million victims, primarily young women and girls, around the world,” Davis said. “As a member of the Congressional Human Trafficking Task Force, I am working to raise awareness to this issue and offer concrete solutions to put an end to this abhorrent practice in America. So I’m pleased be able to host this summit to give area residents the opportunity to speak directly with and learn from experts on this important issue.”

The summit will help to shine a light on human trafficking in this area and the rest of the state. It will feature a panel with four guest speakers to lead the discussion on the issue and participate in a conversation about working together to expose and end human trafficking. Guest speakers include Chris Baker, founder of INK 180; Aubrey Lloyd, co-founder of Uncaged Ministries, clinical consultant for Sarah’s Home and a human trafficking survivor; Carolyn Klaus, organizer and past chair of the Kankakee-Iroquois Human Trafficking Task Force; and Dr. Erin Heil, assistant professor of Criminal Justice Studies at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
