Dental Hygiene program to promote healthy smiles with fundraising walk, treatment day

Parkland College’s Dental Hygiene program is sponsoring a "Miles for Healthy Smiles" Walk Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will start in the M6 parking lot on the campus's north side.

Proceeds from the walk will both benefit programs by local not-for-profit dental organization SmileHealthy and provide supplies for a "Day of Healthy Smiles" community dental treatment day at Parkland. The Walk, which takes place during National Dental Hygiene Month, will also be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the dental hygiene profession.

Area businesses and individuals may join the walk by donating items, sponsoring walkers, or participating as a walker. Sponsorship levels include Bronze ($100), Silver ($250), Gold ($500) or Platinum ($750). Sponsor names and businesses will be appear on T-shirts to be handed out to walkers during the event.

Registering for the walk costs $20 for adults and $15 for children; registration ends Oct. 2. Checks made out to SmileHealthy may be mailed to Peg Boyce at Parkland College, 2400 W. Bradley Ave., Champaign IL 61821. Registration forms and more information are available on the "Miles for Healthy Smiles" Facebook page.

In addition to the walk, the Dental Hygiene program, SmileHealthy, and the Illini Dental Society will sponsor a "Day of Healthy Smiles" dental treatment day Saturday, April 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Parkland College Dental Hygiene Clinic. Only patients who have been prescreened and are given a treatment plan by Parkland or SmileHealthy will be treated. Dental professionals, businesses, and individuals interested in receiving treatment at this special event may contact Peg Boyce at 217/351-2386 or pboyce@parkland.edu for more information.

Available treatment will include extractions and posterior and/or anterior restorations. Volunteer dentists will provide the treatment while volunteer dental hygienists, assistants, and Dental Hygiene program students will attend to patients; assist dentists; provide local anesthesia; and set up, clean up and sterilize unit instruments. Peg Boyce and Kim Pankau, co-directors of the Parkland College Dental Hygiene program, said this collaboration is an important effort in reaching those who do not have access to proper dental care.

"In addition to providing care, it is important to provide awareness of the resources provided by SmileHealthy and Parkland's dental hygiene program," Boyce said. "The students and faculty are excited about the collaboration and the opportunity to make a difference in our community."
