Open Auditions: "The Mystery of Edwin Drood"

Sat, Jan 26, 2013 starting at 1:00 PM - Sun, Jan 27, 2013 starting at 1:00 PM

Energetic singers/actors/dancers needed for award-winning musical

Parkland Theatre will hold open auditions for Rupert Holmes’ musical comedy “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” on Saturday, Jan. 26, 1– 4 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 27, 1– 4 p.m., at the theatre. Callbacks will be held on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.

Director Dallas Street and musical director Aaron Kaplan will be casting energetic singers/actors/dancers, ages 18+, for an audience-interactive “show within a show” set in an English music hall. Character descriptions can be found online at www.parkland.edu/theatre.

Those auditioning should be prepared to sing a musical theatre song, one minute or less, that best displays their vocal ability. An accompanist will be provided. The initial audition will consist of telling a joke (30 seconds to one minute) or funny short story in an English dialect; dance and cold scene readings will take place at callbacks.

Winner of five Tony Awards including Best Musical and currently playing in revival on Broadway, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” centers around a troupe of Victorian music hall actors who are presenting their musical rendition of Charles Dickens’ gothic novel. Dickens’ untimely demise has left the “who” in his unfinished whodunit unrevealed. Parkland Theatre audience members must choose the ending and decide on other unfinished business (400+ variations possible). With so many murderous suspects, who will they vote for? Soaring, passionate melodies and crowd-pleasing music hall numbers make this unique theatrical experience a crowd-pleaser.

Performances take place April 24 through May 5. All members of the community as well as Parkland and U of I students are invited to audition; Parkland Theatre encourages diversity. Those with questions should email theatre@parkland.edu.
