Sunday of Winter Concerts at Parkland Theatre

Enjoy free concerts performed by Parkland College instrumental ensembles, Dec. 8 

Start off winter in a festive mood on Sunday, Dec. 8 in the Parkland Theatre with two concerts by Parkland College instrumental performance ensembles.

At 3 p.m., the Parkland Wind Ensemble and the Parkland Concert Band will perform a variety of selections in a joint concert titled “Wintry Mix.” Verlin Richardson conducts the wind ensemble and Larry Stoner conducts the concert band. Among their many concert selections will be Ronald lo Presti’s 1964 Elegy for a Young American, dedicated to the memory of the late President John F. Kennedy, and Tattoo from La Boheme, Act II by Giacomo Puccini. The event also features familiar holiday tunes such as White Christmas by Irving Berlin and Grown-Up Christmas List by David Foster and Linda Thompson-Jenner.

Next, the “Parkland In Your Ear Big Band Winter Concert” will delight audiences with several classic tunes, starting at 7 p.m. Director Thomas Wirtel will lead the band in such well-known favorites as Come Fly With Me by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn; On The Sunny Side Of The Street by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields; Over The Rainbow by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg; and Glenn Miller’s Moonlight Serenade, arranged as a samba by Bob Florence, among other selections.

Both concerts are free and open to the public.
