The William M. Staerkel Planetarium at Parkland College welcomes singer/songwriter/author Patricia Shih to the dome for a one-show-only performance on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
Shih will perform a highly interactive and educational program titled "Songs in the Key of Earth." The show is appropriate for families. Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for seniors, students, and children under 12, all sold at the door.
The performance is part of the 25th anniversary of the college's "Cultural Center," which includes the planetarium and the Parkland Theatre.
"Songs in the Key of Earth" takes viewers on a rocketship ride through space and lands back on Earth. Along the way, audience members can explore the planet's beauty and fragility; make wishes upon the first star; snuggle up with a lullaby; help make a thunderstorm; and dance under a huge rainbow.
Audience participation, music, projected images, and video all create Shih's magical journey, a celebration of the planet and of love's universal language.
Shih wrote her first song at age 12; at age 15, as part of a song duo, she signed a recording contract with Unicorn Records of Washington, D.C., marking the start of her professional career. After the duo released its first record a year later, numerous TV, radio, concert, and club performances followed, including an international radio broadcast on the Voice of America.
Shih later began her solo career in California, notably with her own PBS special, "Patty Shih - Music from the Gallery." She was named a 2004 Long Island Woman of Distinction by Distinction Magazine
and a Fortune 52 Woman of Achievement by the Long Island Press
in 2007. With six albums to her credit, two for adults and four for children, Shih's work has garnered other praise, including the NAPPA Gold Award and Parent's Choice Award. She also has authored two books about music. Shih performs more than 200 shows, workshops, residencies, classes, and keynote lectures across the country each year.
