Fun Fall Events for 5th/6th-Grade Latino Students Begin Sept. 21

Parkland College will hold a fall series of fun Saturday afternoon events for area Latino/a 5th and 6th graders beginning September 21. All events are free to students.

Called “Parkland Para Sus Hijos,” the series includes “Soccer Day!” on Sept. 21 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Dodds Athletic Center; “Pirate Day!” on Oct. 12 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Parkland Theatre; and “Science Day!” on Nov. 9 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the William M. Staerkel Planetarium. These events are made possible by a grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois.

Parents may drop off and pick up their children at the M1 parking lot or stay in the Parent Lounge. Events will involve the following:
  • “Soccer Day!” includes a kids’ soccer tournament plus free admission to the Parkland Cobras Men’s Soccer team match. Four students will win a Parkland soccer ball, and all participants will receive a free T-shirt.
  • During “Pirate Day!” kids will watch a free showing of the Parkland Theatre play “How I Became a Pirate,” meet the actors after the show, and get a nice surprise from the on-stage treasure chest!
  • Finally, students will be able to explore science activity tables and take in a free Staerkel Planetarium show as part of the fun during “Science Day!”
Free shuttle rides to attend “Parkland Para Sus Hijos” are available for Arcola and Rantoul area students before the “Soccer Day” event on Sept. 21. Students should meet at Rantoul Middle School at 12:30 p.m. or at the Arcola Community Center at noon. Shuttle registration is required by contacting Beth Chepan at bchepan@parkland.edu or 217/351-2887.
