In honor of National Library Week (April 14-20), an annual observation of the American Library Association (ALA), Parkland Library will host an open house and reception on Thursday, April 18 beginning at noon in the library reading lounge.
The library's READ poster for 2013-14 will be unveiled, featuring a Parkland “celebrity” and his or her favorite book. The next year's Parkland Reads book (one book, one college) will also be announced. Special giveaways and snacks will round out the festivities.
A book-giver distribution site for World Book Night 2013, Parkland's library will also be handing out books to pre-registered book givers on April 18, during the reception and throughout the day. Celebrated globally on April 23, World Book Night made its debut in the US in 2012, according to the organization's website, www.us.worldbooknight.org
. It is also celebrated in the UK, Ireland, and Germany. The goal for the night is to put good paperbacks into the hands of light or non-readers in US communities to cultivate an appreciation for reading. World Book Night provides 20 free paperback copies of one title to each book giver, who then gives them to new readers, especially those who may not have access to printed books.
