Welcome Convocation 2016

Thu, Aug 25, 2016 starting at 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Fifth annual event for campus to feature ceremony, outdoor student organizations/activities fair

Parkland College will hold its annual Fall Welcome Convocation on Thursday, August 25, beginning at noon in the Student Union cafeteria. This kickoff to the new academic year welcomes all those joining or returning to a campus community that values scholarship, academic honesty, and civility.

A highlight of Parkland’s welcome-back week for students and employees, the fall convocation introduces new students to the college’s senior administration and its student leaders while informing students about values of the campus. It creates a welcoming environment complete with a free meal and a student involvement, housing, and job information fair.

The event includes a brief ceremony with greetings from administrators and student leaders at noon, followed by the outdoor student life fair and free lunch  (with your Parkland ID) for the campus community.

Dean of Students Marietta Turner said the convocation is designed to strengthen students’ connections to Parkland. “It emphasizes that they are on a journey that begins with their first class and ends with a degree,” she said.

“College is where students figure out what they want to do with their lives and get the education they need to achieve their dreams,” Turner added. “Convocation starts that process.”

The Welcome Convocation is part of Parkland’s First Year Experience (FYE) initiative, a campus-wide effort designed to increase retention and graduation rates. Parkland launched the initiative based on national data confirming that students who have a “powerful” first-year experience are more likely to complete a degree or certificate.
