Live! Local Harpist Returns to Planetarium

Fri, Feb 13, 2015 starting at 8:30 PM - Sat, Feb 14, 2015 starting at 8:30 PM

Staerkel's "Starry Night" concert to feature UIUC's Ann McLaughlin, two shows only

Following the success of "Celestial Strings: An Evening of Harp and Stargazing," harpist Ann McLaughlin returns to the William M. Staerkel Planetarium Feb. 13 and 14 for two live performances.

"Starry Night: Harp Music Under the Star-filled Sky" will take audiences on a delightful journey of music inspired by the celestial canopy above. Music ranging from classical to pops will be synchronized with the planetarium's stars and special visual effects. Each performance begins at 8:30 p.m.

"Live programming is always a challenge," says David Leake, planetarium director. "Nothing can be programmed, and everything must be run live from the control console. Ms. McLaughlin is a professional and very easy to work with. We had a lot of fun putting together the last sold-out performance, and I look forward to Valentine's Day weekend.”

McLaughlin is a graduate music performance student at the University of Illinois, studying with Dr. Ann Yeung. A winner of the 2011-12 University of North Texas Concerto Competition, she has also recorded as an ensemble member with the University of North Texas Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, and Harp Ensemble (the UNT Harp Beats). She also has been an official street musician in her hometown of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as part of a downtown arts program.
Tickets to the performance are $5 per person, all sold at the door. For a full schedule of planetarium programs, call the show hotline at 217/351-2446 or see the planetarium website.
