"Kick Out Hunger" Soccer Tourney

Sat, Aug 30, 2014 starting at 10:00 AM - Sun, Aug 31, 2014 starting at 4:00 PM

Men’s, Women's Soccer Games to Benefit Food Pantry at Parkland

The Parkland College Men's Soccer team will host a "Kick out Hunger" soccer tournament, benefiting the Wesley Food Pantry at Parkland, Aug. 30 and 31 at the soccer field on the campus’s north side.

Eight college soccer teams representing Illinois, Indiana and Wyoming will participate in the two-day tournament. Games take place Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, a Women's Soccer game will be played at noon on both days.

Cobras Men's Soccer Coach Mark Sikora said teams hope to raise $2,000 during this event, to help make a difference in the lives of families in east central Illinois. The fundraising goal will feed approximately 300 students.

"The Parkland food pantry has already served hundreds of students and their families," he said. "This is going to be a great time, and we encourage everyone to come out to help keep hunger at bay in our area. Besides fund raising, our players have volunteered hours to the pantry as shopping helpers and interpreters to a variety of families in the C-U community, and I feel that this event is a great way to continue our relationship with the pantry during our season."

Former Wesley Food Pantry Director Donna Camp, who leads Partner Services at Eastern Illinois Foodbank, says just a $5 to $10 donation to the Wesley Pantry at Parkland College will feed a student for a week.

"Many Parkland students make great sacrifices in order to attend college," Camp said. "We as a community should do everything we can to support them in their efforts to make a better life for themselves and their families. That's a pretty easy way to make a big difference in a student's life."

While donations will be taken at the event, there is also an online donation site to make it easier for anyone who wants to support the effort to give. To donate online, visit gofundme.com/Parkland-Kick-Out-Hunger, or donate via PayPal at the Wesley Pantry Donations site (enter "Parkland" in the Note to Seller textbox after PayPal login). Those wishing to donate also may do so by mail or by delivering their gift to 1203 W. Green St., Urbana, Illinois 61801. Please make checks payable to Wesley Evening Food Pantry, adding "Parkland Pantry" to the memo line.

The Wesley Pantry at Parkland, which launched last December, is open the second Wednesday of each month from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. to serve students. It is located in the S Building on the campus’s south side. For more information, visit wesleypantry.org.
