Theatre Presents "The Drowsy Chaperone"

Thu, Apr 16, 2015 starting at 7:30 PM - Sat, May 02, 2015 starting at 3:00 PM

Meta-musical winner of five Tony awards; Parkland performs April 16-May 2

Parkland Theatre presents the musical comedy The Drowsy Chaperone April 16–May 2.

Winner of five Tony Awards, The Drowsy Chaperone features a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, with music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. J.W. Morrissette directs the Parkland production, with musical direction by David Zych and choreography by Jean Korder.

Past and present hilariously collide in this tuneful and masterful meta-musical, a loving send-up of the frivolous musicals of the Jazz Age! A die-hard musical theatre fan is playing his favorite cast album, The Drowsy Chaperone, on his turntable. As he listens, the musical literally bursts to life in his apartment, telling the story of a vivacious Broadway starlet trying to find her true love! Throw in a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan, and an intoxicated chaperone, and you've got an evening of musical comedy gold!

The Associated Press called the original production "Delightful, Sparkling Entertainment! You’ll be over the moon! We haven’t seen anything quite this original in a long time."

The Drowsy Chaperone production features a cast of local community talent: Alexis Dawtyne, Tafadzwa Diener, Ray Essick, Abigail Gailey, Warren Garver, Jenny Gleason, Lincoln Machula, Katie Odom, Michelle Ogden, Tracy Harpster, Matthew Henry, Jace Jamison, Ryan Jenkins, Tina Radi, William Anthony Sebastian Rose, Nick Schneider, Evan Seggebruch, Andrew Smith, Marah Sotelo, and Chelsea Zych.

Performances are April 16, 17, 18, 24, 25, 30, May 1, 2 at 7:30 p.m. and April 26 at 3 p.m. The Drowsy Chaperone will be presented on Parkland Theatre’s main stage, the newly named Harold and Jean Miner Theatre.

Ticket prices are $16 for adults, $14 for students and seniors (65+), $10 for youth 12 and under, and $12 each for groups of 15 or more.

In collaboration with Parkland College’s Hospitality Department, a combination dinner and show package is available for The Drowsy Chaperone on Friday, April 17 for $30. Call 217/373-3874 and leave a message of interest. Space is limited to only 24 patrons. Act fast!
