Facilities
The Library is located on two floors of the Parkland College campus, directly above the College Center. The upper floor features reading tables and carrels in the only silent study area on campus. The main floor has over 50 computer workstations, an electronic classroom, group study room, and is where the main service points in the Library are located.
Accessibility
Parkland Library is accessible to individual with disabilities via the elevator in the College Center. The elevator in the Library will go to the upper floor; it does not go down to the first floor of the College. A CC TV (image reader) reader is available near the Information Desk. Televisions with closed captioning capabilities are available in the Media Viewing Area and accessible computer stations are located in Information Services and the Library Classroom (R-227). Assistance is available at all times the Library is open.
Food and Drink
Covered drinks are permitted in the Library. Food is not permitted unless for organized Library sponsored events.
Lost and Found
Items found throughout the Library are held at the Service Desk and then sent to the Public Safety Office (X-109).
Children
Children under the age of 16 are welcome in the Library but must always be accompanied by an adult. The Library staff is not responsible for the safety or behavior of children left unattended.
Parkland College Policy and Procedure Manual Policy 5.04
It is understood that the mission of the college is to provide an atmosphere that is as free as possible from outside distractions and disruptions. In order to maintain this environment, unaccompanied/unauthorized minor children are not allowed on the campus. To protect children from possible injury and to maintain a safe, secure learning environment, children are not permitted in classes and are not to be left unsupervised anywhere on campus, including employee work areas.
Printing
Printing costs 5 cents per page in the Library and Open Computer Labs. A Parkland College ID card serves as a print card. Value may be aded to the card at a Value-Add station, located by the Library Information Desk and outside D209. For patrons who do not have a Parkland ID, a PC Print card is available for purchase from the Value-Add Station and costs $1 (75 cents for the card and 25 cents in prints). The machine does not give change and will only take bills.
Photocopying
Public accessible photocopy machines are located on the Library's 1st floor, near the Information Desk. Cost is 10 cents per copy. Microform printers are located in the Information Services Area behind the Information Desk. Parkland faculty and staff may use the Library staff machine when their department machine is unavailable; ask at the Service Desk. Library use takes precedence. It is the responsibility of the individual to comply with U.S. Copyright Law, which is posted near each machine.
Copyright Warnings
The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the reproduction, distribution, adaptation, public performance, and public display of copyrighted material. Responsibility for any possible copyright infringement lies solely with the user; the Parkland College and the Library disclaims any responsibility or liability resulting thereof.
Change Machine
A change machine is available near the food vending area by the Cafeteria. The Library is unable to provide change. Photocopiers will accept $1 and $5 bills, but require the user to make at least one copy before returning change.
Book and Media Theft Detection System
A security system is located at both the north and south exits. Chimes will sound if a patron exits with library materials which are not properly charged out. The patron must then return to the Service Desk to have the materials charged out. Personal bags may be searched by a member of the Library staff.
Telephone
A pay phone and house phone are available in the College Center near the bottom of the Library stairs. A house phone is located near the computer on the upper level.
Silent Zone
The Library maintains a silent study floor on the upper level. Patrons are expected to be respectful of others around them and monitor their own noise levels. Please turn off cell phone ringers and pagers, and take phone conversations in another area of the Library. If a patron has a concern about noise levels, s/he should contact a Library staff member immediately.
