Placement

ESL Classes
For students who wish to improve their English skills, Parkland's Intensive ESL Program, within the department of International Education, offers English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. A TOEFL score is not required for students who wish to take ESL classes.

Regular Academic Classes
To be eligible for regular academic classes (courses above the 100 level), nonnative English-speakers must meet one of the following requirements:

Some classes also require placement into ESL 101, which is equivalent to ENG 101 and is designed specifically for non-native English speakers. This placement requirement is met by taking Parkland's Writing Sample. Additionally, some classes require math placement.  This requirement is met by taking Parkland's Math Assessment. Only students who are eligible for regular academic classes can take the Writing Sample and/or Math Assessment.

Many courses have additional requirements.  For specific course requirements, please refer to Parkland's catalog.  The courses section of the catalog lists every Parkland class (in alphabetical order), gives a description for each class, and lists any prerequisites.
