The Summer Session at Salzburg
College offers an introduction to various aspects of the Austrian and European
culture. Most courses emphasize the special opportunities provided by the
Salzburg setting. Field experience including visits to historical sites, to
cultural
and professional institutions, and to musical events constitutes an important
part of the program.

comments on Salzburg
Because of its location, history, and rich cultural heritage, the city
of Salzburg offers the ideal setting for a European studies program. With
a population
of about 150,000, the city is situated in the northern foothills of the
Alps and is often considered one of the world’s most beautiful cities.
Famous as the birthplace of Mozart and the host to the annual Salzburg Festival,
the
city has long been a cultural center for Europe.
Salzburg College is a small private Austrian institution founded in 1971
in order to offer American students a European studies program in a European
setting. Salzburg College occupies a 16th century town house on Ursulinenplatz,
a small square, in the heart of the Old City. The five-story building includes
classrooms, offices, a lounge, dining room, music practice space, photo
labs, an art studio that can also serve as a gallery, and a library with
a spectacular
view of the city.
A four-day trip to Vienna, Austria’s historic capital, will provide
a broad range of experiences related to history, art, music, and modern life.
In addition, a variety of local field trips constitute an integrated part
of
the academic program. There is also some time for independent travel on
weekends.
To maximize cultural involvement, students live with Austrian families.
They take their breakfasts and dinners at home, while weekday lunches
are served
at Salzburg College. Usually, family accommodations are reserved for
students up to the age of 26, but other accommodations can be made available
upon
request.
Costs vary slightly every year. Therefore, costs for the current year
should be obtained from the director of Study Abroad. Most types of
aid available
to Parkland students may be used for a semester abroad, and, in addition,
there
are a limited number of Parkland Foundation Scholarships.
Study Abroad students save several hundred dollars in Parkland Tuition
costs, as the college charges students for just one credit hour of
tuition and fees,
no matter how many courses they enroll in abroad.
Although the dates vary slightly every year, this summer program
normally runs from mid-May to late June.
In order for students to study abroad, they must have completed
12 credit hours of college-level work; have a 2.75 grade point
average; and have
completed English 101 by the time of travel.
The application deadline is February 15th.
