- Third World/Non-Western Culture Courses
Students in most programs must take a course in non-Western or Third World culture to graduate from Parkland. Courses with non-western or Third World content are in anthropology, geography, history, political science, humanities, fine arts, and literature. Specific course numbers are listed in the General Education Core Courses in the Parkland Catalog. - Global Studies Program
Parkland’s new Global Studies Program links learning activities in languages, cultures, social sciences, and commerce with global approaches to problem solving. The goal is to prepare students to become more successful citizens and workers in an increasingly global society through Parkland’s offering of academic and experiential opportunities in global learning environments. This interdisciplinary program encourages students to complete designated “global studies” alongside completion of appropriate study abroad, service learning, Honors Program activities, Phi Theta Kappa, or similar service-community organizations. In addition to projects or service, students complete designated courses within the areas of foreign languages, humanities and fine arts, social sciences, and business and agri-industries. These global studies courses and activities lead to the designation of Global Studies Emphasis on the students’ transcript. Faculty will assist interested students in designing study programs appropriate to their interests. Flexible by design, this program allows students, in consultation with an advisor in the Global Studies Program, to tailor the program to their needs and interests.
