The Medical Laboratory Technology program provides both the classroom and clinical
experience necessary to join the clinical laboratory science field. Graduates
earn an associate in applied science degree and are eligible to take the National
Registry examination given by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
(ASCP) and other certifying agencies.
The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory
Sciences (NAACLS). The Medical Laboratory Technology program is a sequence
of courses and clinical practicum experiences that prepares students for technician
positions in medical laboratories and related businesses.
High school graduation or equivalent is required. Basic mathematics and science
aptitude, as well as good reading and reasoning skills, are highly recommended.
As a full-time student, you can earn an A.A.S. degree in two years. Flexible
part-time schedules are available for completing general education courses.

Most of the credit hours for the program come from Parkland College, but students
must first be accepted at Kankakee Community College. This partnership allows
students to stay at Parkland yet receive a degree from Kankakee. Students
are enrolled in-district at both institutions. Hands-on job experiences/practicum
will be provided by clinical sites in the
Champaign-Urbana area.
• Support courses such as chemistry, biology, English, psychology, and
mathematics are taken at Parkland College.
• Medical Laboratory Technology courses (MEDT prefix) are taken as online
classes.
• Clinical and laboratory work experiences will be completed at a local
hospital.
