Do you want to get hearing instrument dispenser certified in Illinois?

Parkland College Department of Health Professions provides course equivalents for the 29 distance learning modules required for International Hearing Society certification as hearing instrument dispenser. These are offered in collaboration with the Illinois Hearing Society. 

How to get started

    Student

  1. Complete the 29 Learning Modules obtained from the International Hearing Association https://www.ihsinfo.org//IhsV2/Store/010_Textbooks/005_Distance_Learning_Package.cfm or go to www.ihsinfo.org and click on the following path: Store, Textbooks, Distance Learning Course 6-Book Package
  2. Register as a non-degree-seeking student at Parkland College http://www.parkland.edu/admissions/howtoapply.html or go to http://parkland.edu and click on the following path: Future Students, Admissions, How to Enroll, Course Enrollee Apply for Admission, Online Application.
  3. Send a copy of your transcripts identifying at least an associate's degree to: Health Professions Department, Parkland College, 2400 West Bradley Avenue, Champaign, IL 61821-1899
  4. As proof that you have completed the 29 learning modules, send a copy of your Certificate of Completion issued by the International Hearing Association stating that you have completed the 29 learning modules to: Health Professions Department, Parkland College, 2400 West Bradley Avenue, Champaign, IL 61821-1899.

  6. Upon receipt of transcripts and proof of completion, the Health Professions Department of Parkland College converts the modules into college courses equaling 12 credit hours by enrolling applicant in the courses representing the 29 learning modules (HCS 190, HCS 191, HCS 192 and HCS 193).
  7. Health Professions Department notifies the Business Office that the applicant should be billed at the in-district rate. The in-district rate as of summer semester 2008 is $87.00 per credit hour. The Business Office issues a bill for 12 credit hours at $87.00 per credit hour, for a total of $1,044.00.

  9. Pay the bill.
  10. Send an email to: ssauer@parkland.edu indicating bill has been paid.

  12. Health Professions Department of Parkland College verifies that the bill has been paid and issues grades.
  13. Health Professions Department of Parkland College sends an email to the student indicating that grades have been issued.

  16. Upon receipt of transcript, submit the transcript and applicable Examination Registration form to the Illinois Department of Public Health, Hearing Instrument Program at 500 E. Monroe Street, 1st Floor, Springfield, Illinois 62701. (Examination forms can be accessed at http://www.idph.state.il.us/HealthWellness/healthassessment.htm).

•  HCS 190 Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech and Hearing Mechanism
Outer ear, disorders of outer ear, middle ear, tympanometry, disorders of middle ear, inner ear and auditory pathways, cochlear and retrocochlear disorders.
•  HCS 191 Hearing Science
Physiological acoustics, psychological acoustics, hearing instrument candidacy, history, electronics, components, characteristics, digital technology.
•  HCS 192 Introduction to Audiology
Introduction to audiometry, pure tone audiometry, pure tone bone conduction tests, masking, hearing analysis (audiograms), speech testing, and speech discrimination tests.
•  HCS 193 Aural Rehabilitation
ANSI standards, ear molds, fitting of hearing instruments, fitting verification, real ear measurement, post-fitting care, follow-up and rehabilitation; maintenance, modification, and repair.
