Infection Control Workshop

(2 hours)

Presenter: June Schwartz

The infection control refresher workshop is designed to update and train the dental office staff in the current infection control techniques.  The workshop meets the OSHA requirement of yearly training for the dental office staff.  The workshop will be individualized to meet the need of each office.  It is preferred that the staff has previously attended a formal course on infection control techniques and that this workshop is used as a refresher.

The presenter will individualize the following subjects to meet the needs of the office:

  1. Explanation of the Blood borne Pathogens Standards and where a copy is kept in the office.
  2. General information about the epidemiology and symptoms of blood borne diseases.
  3. Modes of transmission of blood borne pathogens.
  4. Explanation of the Exposure Control Plan and how employees can obtain a copy.
  5. How to recognize tasks involving occupational exposure.
  6. Use and limits of engineering controls, work practice controls and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  7. Where PPE is located and how to use, remove, handle, decontaminated and dispose of it.
  8. Effectiveness, safety benefits, and method of administering Hepatitis B vaccine.
  9. What to do if there is an emergency spill of blood or OPIM.
  10. What to do if an exposure incident occurs.
  11. Post-exposure evaluation and follow-up that will be made available to employees after an exposure incident.
  12. The system of labels or color-coding used to warn employees against biohazards.

Time for questions and answers will be included.  It is recommended that the office provide a copy of the Infection Control Plan to the trainer in advance of the presentation date to enable the presentation to be tailored to the needs of the office. The workshop presenter may request that a pretest be given to the staff to help her focus the presentation.

The OSHA-Infection Control Workshop has been well received in the community.  Dr. Chifan Cheng of Urbana, Illinois wrote the following in her thank-you note.

“We have greatly benefited from this training.  Your talk had a behavioral changing effect on us: washing hands more, use of needles, paying attention to our masks and eye wear, etc. Thank you for doing our OSHA training.”

Cost of the OSHA infection control workshop is $200 per office of 10 persons or less.   For additional persons, add $20 each.

orkshop will be scheduled when it is convenient for the office and the presenter.
