Mentoring Services The transition from high school or the workforce to college can be an overwhelming experience. Little or no support from family or friends makes the transition even more difficult. The mentoring program links students who are new to Parkland College and the program (mentee) with a returning TRiO/SSS student (mentor) who will assist them with the transition to college by personalizing the academic environment; exploring campus resources; strengthening college survival skills; promoting self confidence; role-modeling academic excellence; and providing support and referral to other available resources. Peers are in the same boat you are and can relate to the struggles of balancing academics, work, family, and social engagements. They provide support and guidance to new TRiO/SSS students in the areas of academics, social growth, and personal development. Essentially, mentors help with the adjustment from life before college, be it high school or real world experiences, to becoming a well-rounded college student. The connection one establishes and maintains with his/her mentor is key to getting the most out of the mentoring experience. Over the course of the semester, mentors spend time with their mentees in a variety of ways—they eat together, grab a cup of coffee or soda, attend TRiO/SSS workshops and activities, exercise in the fitness center, study together, talk and hang out, etc.... The list of possibilities on campus is endless. A positive mentor/mentee relationship will enable new TRiO/SSS students to develop a stronger connection with Parkland College, thereby increasing the likelihood for students to enjoy their tenure at Parkland, obtain academic and personal success, and graduate/transfer to a four-year college or university. |
