For Art's Sake

A series of gallery interviews and talks highlighting artists, art issues, and exhibitions at the Parkland Art Gallery. The 30 min. videotapes are aired regularly on Parkland College Educational Television and are available in the Parkland Library.   • Ephemeral Rhythms: Julie Vogel
    Part one of two.
    June, 2000 - Champaign artist Julie Vogel juxtaposes manufactured and found objects with the bodies of fish to examine the brevity and beauty of existence. Vogel discusses her choice of materials and some of the issues addressed in her work. This program was partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

  • Ephemeral Rhythms: Jody Hanson
    Part two of two.
    June, 2000 - New York artist Jody Hanson discusses her installation pieces in the Parkland Art Gallery. This work explore her fascination with light, time and motion with real time images of water and oil. Hanson also constructed a large camera obscura over the exterior gallery window to provide an unusual perspective of being inside a lens. This program was partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

  • Works of Clay
    July, 1999 - Denise Seif speaks with Gil Stengel and Yukiko Muroe about their wood fired ceramic work. Muroe works sculpturally creating pieces through slab constructions, while Stengel's work reflects a more traditional potters background in his wheel-thrown vessels. This program was partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

  • Watermedia/Diversity: State of the Art 1999
    February, 1999 - Curated by Glenn Bradshaw - Watercolorist Don Lake provides an insightful look at this exhibit of nationally recognized masters in the field of watermedia. The 19 artists selected for this exhibition are known for their individuality and personal expression. Participating artists include: Catherine Anderson, Edward Betts, Gerald Brommer, Keith Crown, Carol Fisher, Carol Hammett, Patricia Harrington, Kathleen Jardine, Serge Hollerbach, William Lawrence, Anne Adams Robertson Massie, DeLoss McGraw, Dean Mitchel, Carol Pickle, Patricia Reynolds, Thomas Sgouros, Pat San Soucie, Carl C. Sublett, and Mary Wilbanks.

  • Drawing Invitational
    November, 1998 - Guest Curator John Ekstrom gives a guided tour of this invitational exhibit. This exhibit showcases what is going on in contemporary drawing in all it's various manifestations, it illustrated that drawing is an expressive force in its own right. Participating artists included: Pat Andrea, Phyllis Bramson, Phyllis Edelstein, Richard Hull, Michiko Itatani, Wesely Kimler, James McGarrell, Timothy Nero, Art Paul, Robert Schultz, Hollis Sigler, Duncan Webb, and Nina Weiss. This program was partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

  • Cutting Through Traditions: Art Quilts
    June, 1998 - Local artists Deborah Fell, Judy Husband, and Mary McDonald talk to Gallery director Denise Seif about quilting and the expressive avenues of this media. Each of these artists addresses the tradition of quilting while at the same time experimenting with the media to create narrative works with revealing personal symbols, meaning, and growth. This program was partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

  • Interpreting Surroundings Exhibit
    February, 1998 - Denise Seif talks with Artist Tracey Moore.

  • Jess Beyler Solo Exhibit
    October, 1997 - Artist Jess Beyler and Denise Seif, Gallery Director discuss the abstract paintings and drawings that were exhibited in her solo show.

  • Robert Lee Mejer Solo Exhibit
    July, 1997 - Denise Seif interviews Quincy artist Robert Lee Mejer about his Monotypes and his views on art and teaching.

  • The Subject Comes First
    October, 1996 - Guest Curators, Craig McMonigal and George Rehrey, discuss this exhibit of silver-based black and white photography invitational. Artists include: Elizabeth Yen, Barry Perlus, Elizabeth Patterson, Rhondal McKinney, Steve Goff, and Bill DePalma.

  • Parkland Art Faculty Exhibition
    September, 1995 - Don Lake and Denise Seif take a look at the Parkland Art Faculty exhibit. They discuss the work on display and the classes taught by the art faculty at Parkland.

  • Illinois Glass Invitational
    January, 1995 - Guest Curator Jon Wolfe and Denise Seif, discuss the work of the four Illinois glass artists featured in the exhibit at the Parkland Art Gallery. Artists include: Barrie Bredemeier, William Carlson, Joel Philip Myers, and Janusz A. Walentynowicz.

  • Still Life National Drawing Invitational
    September, 1994 - Denise Seif talks with guest curator, Juanita Gammon about the color pencil exhibit focusing on still life. Participating artists include Barbara Eidin, Judy McDonald, Gary Smith, Jane Wikstrand, and Kenneth L. Zonker.

  • Edward Boccia
    December, 1994 - Denise Seif talks with St. Louis artist Edward Boccia about this 16 year retrospective of his paintings, drawings, and collages.

  • Light Impressions
    October, 1994 - Exhibiting artists Harold Seth Miller discusses his photographs with Denise Seif.

  • Contemporary Landscapes
    October, 1993 - Ohio artist, Ronald Krotel discusses his large scale drawings with Gallery Director, Denise Seif.

  • Metals Illinois
    March, 1993 - Guest curator Robert Laible and Denise Seif, discuss this invitational exhibit of contemporary metal work by Illinois metalsmiths. Artists include: Lisa Costello, Dennis French, David Griffin, Brent Kington, Aaron Macsai, Richard Mawdsley, Alan Mette, Sarah Perkins, Joe Scott, Billie Theide, and Sue Unzicker.

    February, 1993 - An interview with guest curator Ed Shay about the 1993 State of the Art, Biennial National Watercolor Invitational.

  • International Artists' Book Collaborations:
    Women at Work
    October, 1992 - Denise Seif and guest curator Dara Larson discusses this unique international exhibition in the Parkland Art Gallery.

  • Lyric Thought, Lyric Form
    September, 1992 - Guest Curator Bridgit Kelly, and Denise Seif talk about the exhibit of drawings that were inspire by poetry. Artist include: Judith Baker, Riley P. Brewster, Lisa Lawley, Sam Messer, William Rolthfuss, Jenny Lynn McNutt, Siena Sanderson, and David Provan.

  • Kimiko Gunji, The Art of Ikebana
    July, 1992 - Kimiko Gunji demonstrates the beautiful Japanese art of Ikebana, flower arranging.

  • Fresh Ideas From Familiar Faces
    March, 1992 - The premise of this exhibition was to encourage the artists to explore and realize new ideas in their work. Ron Kovatch, guest curator, and Denise Seif discuss the importance of change and risk-taking in the making of art. Participating artists include: Rimas VisGirda, Mary Seyfarth, Anne Shatas, Katherin Ross, Dennis Mitchell, Yih-Wen Kuo, Bonnie Katz, Bill Farrell, Paul Dresang, Harris Deller, Susan Bostwick, and Dan Anderson.

    February, 1992 - Lys Martin's photographs are homages to photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, representing some of his most widely acclaimed works of flower still lifes. martin discusses this recent photographic work which contemplates the eventual decay and potential rebirth of life.     February, 1992 - John Pakosta's background in both science and art has led him to this site-specific installation at the Parkland Art Gallery. Pakosta discusses his installation of flowers, arranged and organized into grids, which "confronts our vain wish to structure and control nature." Part two of three

    February, 1992 - Chicago painter Lillian Heard uses portraiture in its classical sense, a realistic representation of the figure, or as a subjective portrait filled with psychological and metaphoric images.     January, 1992 - Denise Seif talks to guest curator Deanna Bertoncini of the Bertoncini Gallery, Chicago, about the work and ideas of four contemporary Latin American artists.

    March, 1991 - Harold Gregor, guest curator, and Joy Van Camp, Gallery Director, discuss this biennial national watercolor invitational held in the Parkland Art Gallery.
