Nevertheless: That's
Our Guarantee!
John Havlik solo exhibit
November 5 - December 12, 2003
Parkland Art Gallery was pleased to host a new exhibition focusing on
graphic design. Nevertheless: That's Our Guarantee!, a solo exhibit by
local artist John Havlik.
Havlik, senior designer at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, displayed
the design work he has produced for Krannert Center as well as a selection
of pieces created specifically for the space of the Parkland Art
Gallery. First, his collection of Krannert Center posters demonstrated Havlik's
ability to visually respond to a wide range of artistic presentations. Each
poster illustrates a visual mood or feel that is a response to the performance
experience.
The second half of the exhibition was art about commercial art. Havlik
created a series of art works for MFA ("Mighty Fine Art"), to demonstrate
the range of products a graphic designer is involved with, from T-shirt designs
to limited edition books. With tongue-in-cheek humor, Havlik provided an
insider's look at the graphic design profession.
Havlik gave a gallery talk on November 13 at 7 p.m. He offered
information about his work on display and insight into his experience as
a graphic designer. Born in Chicago in 1950, Havlik received his BFA and
MFA from Southern Illinois University. He has worked in the advertising industry
for 22 years as an illustrator and designer in Saint Louis and Champaign-Urbana.
He has won numerous national, regional, and local awards for his drawing
and design, as well as purchase awards from universities in Missouri, Indiana,
and North Dakota.
Havlik will also be the featured artist for this year's High School Art Seminar
on Friday, November 14. Seven area high schools have signed up to participate
in this event. The students will be introduced to visual communication in
a hands-on session by combining different typefaces with images and symbols.
They will also have a computer studio session using the computer to create
3D animations. There will be a discussion period with the featured artist
and a tour of his exhibit in the gallery.
Nevertheless: That's Our Guarantee! was made possible with the cooperation
of Electric Picture, Whale's Tale Marketing Group, Dean's Superior Blueprint,
and Krannert Center. Exhibits at the Parkland Art Gallery are partially supported
by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. All events in
the handicapped accessible gallery are free and open to the public.
