“Art is not as much about presenting the answers as identifying the questions and acknowledging the creative search.” Ellen Murray
The Parkland Art gallery is pleased to announce the opening of our 7th Biennial Watercolor Invitational “State of the Art 2001: Watercolor.art” curated by Ellen Murray.

Watercolor.art is an exhibition where both watercolor and art are globally linked. The twenty contemporary artists were selected for the provocative questions they ask through their work. “Art is not as much about presenting the answers as identifying the questions and acknowledging the creative search.” Ellen Murray explains in her curator’s statement, “This continuing search is the bond between the artist and the work, the work and the viewer, the personal and the universal, and the past and the future.”

These artists pose captivating queries about, social beliefs, personal identity, popular culture, and the art process itself. Murray explains that she feels that art is poised to play a more interactive and pivotal role in shaping the 21st. Century due to the increased advances and accessibility offered to us with technology. Each of the twenty artists selected for this international, invitational, helps articulate and shape the “state of the art” .

The link for all of the work in exhibit is the passionate and emotional expressions of the artists’ thoughts and concerns through watercolor and watercolor combined with non-traditional media and processes. The exhibit reflects contemporary issues and social consciousness.

Ellen Murray, who curated this exhibition is a Professor of Art at Arizona State University. She will provide a gallery talk the evening of the reception on March 6.
