Our Program
Specialized training
Parkland's Construction Design and Management program prepares you to enter
the construction industry in two major areas: building construction involves
preparation of drawings and development of cost estimates for needed labor,
materials, and equipment; civil construction involves drafting of structures,
subdivisions, roads, bridges, and mechanical drawings.
A comprehensive high-tech program
With the background you'll acquire in building science and management, you
will be able to understand and prepare architectural drawings, contracts,
plans, and specifications. You will also be knowledgeable about construction
methods and materials. You will become familiar with scheduling, contracts,
cost accounting, and specifications for road, bridge, and building projects.
You will also learn how to search for employment in the construction industry.
Because the use of computers for job costs, scheduling, estimating, and surveying
has become increasingly important in this field, your course work will emphasize
computer-aided drafting, modern automated survey practices, and related software.
On-the-job training
Summer field work experience will provide you with practical, hands-on training
within the construction industry.
Length of study
This program has been designed for both full-time and part-time students.
You can complete the four required semesters plus the summer field work
experience in two years of full-time study.
Interrupted sequence option
This specialized work-study sequence allows students to alternate work
experience and class studies. Cooperatively developed with the Illinois
Department of Transportation, this sequence is available to qualified students.
Other schedules may be used when working with other employers.
Higher education and transfer option
With substitutions in the mathematics and physics courses, this program
may be transferred to universities offering a Bachelor of Science in construction
management.
Entry requirements
Although no specific course work is required for entry, high school courses
in mathematics, mechanical drawing, and physics are helpful.
