Career Information

Employment opportunities

About one-third of structural and civil drafters work for engineering and architectural firms, while one-third of mechanical drafters work in durable goods manufacturing industries such as machinery, electrical equipment, and fabricated metals. Government agencies, construction companies, public utilities, and lumberyards also employ drafters.

Job outlook
Industrial growth and the increasing complexity of design problems will fuel the demand for drafting services. As CAD technology continues to advance, it has become an increasingly powerful tool, simplifying many traditional drafting tasks; therefore, opportunities will be best for those trained in the use of computer-aided drafting systems.

Earning potential
The average entry wage in Illinois is about $20,800/year. The Occupational Wage Survey for Illinois reports average salaries ranging from $25,440 to $39,520/year. The national average salary for drafting occupations is over $41,110/year.

Career advancement
As a beginner, you will start as a junior drafter, doing routine work under close supervision. After gaining experience, you will be assigned more difficult work with less supervision and may advance to senior drafter or supervisor. With additional education, you can become an engineer, designer, or architect.
