COMPUTER SCIENCE & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Computer Science/Computer Information Systems

The Computer Scientist
Computer scientists use a high level of theoretical expertise to research, invent, or apply new technology to solve complex problems. They serve both private and public industry, from academic institutions to government agencies to software and gaming companies. Computer scientists may specialize in areas ranging from application theory to hardware solutions to programming language design. Their jobs may include developing and advancing uses of virtual reality, extending human-computer interaction, or designing robots. In private industry, they often develop specialized languages and information technologies or design programming tools, knowledge-based systems, and computer games.

The Computer Information Systems Manager
Businesses and organizations need to incorporate updated technology in their daily operations in order to stay competitive. As electronic commerce becomes more common, firms look to computer information systems managers for direction on how and when to apply existing computer technologies. CIS managers perform numerous tasks in consultation with top management, from constructing business plans to overseeing network security to handling Internet operations. As managers, they direct the work of systems analysts, computer programmers, support specialists, and other computer-related workers as they install hardware and software, create programming and systems designs, and meet personnel and equipment requirements.
