Master Planning Perspective Overview
2007 marked Parkland’s 40th year in operation. Parkland College
has continued to grow since its start in 1967. At present, the fall
enrollment is 6 times greater, and annual enrollment is nearly 7.4
times greater than it was when the college began in 1967. Annual
enrollment alone increased 10.9 percent from FY 2002 to FY 2006.
In
1996, Parkland College contracted with the National Center for Higher
Education Management Systems (NCHEMS) and Paulien & Assoc, Inc. to
assess the space needs of the college and to develop the Master Campus
Development Plan. The results of this space assessment showed a 111%
deficit of student lounge and service space, a 19% deficit of food
facilities space and a 46% deficit of administrative services space.
This plan identified the overall deficit for over 127,000 square feet
of assignable area and an additional 37,000 square feet in additional
programming.
For FY 2009, Parkland College is
seeking to meet the needs assessed in that report and look to projected
enrollment into 2018. This study proposes to expand the existing campus
to provide for Student Services, Applied Technology, Fine and Applied
Arts, Fitness and Recreation, Athletics, Maintenance and other
renovations. This will add approximately 210,000 square feet to the
existing campus.
The goal for this master plan is to
demonstrate the current need for growth, the projection of future
enrollment, demonstrate potential areas of development and estimate
project budgets for that development. The intent is to continue
Parkland’s reputation of a quality learning environment with a truly
unique community setting and make it an even more competitive campus
for the future.
