Fitness Center   Live Construction Camera
This project is an addition to the existing Dodds Athletic Center. The completion of this project would give the College a new "state of the art" athletic facility with space for Kinesiology, dance and aerobics, strength training, an indoor walking track, new locker rooms and team rooms, and coach’s offices. Included in this project would be the remodeling of the lower level of the gymnasium. The first phase of construction has started with the demolition and reconstruction of the locker rooms and site work for the new addition. Completion of the project is scheduled for August of 2012.

PHS Drainage Improvements Phase XII
Phase XII of the Campus Drainage Improvements is focused on the areas adjacent to the Tony Noel Agricultural Technology Center and the new Applied Technology Center. The existing parking lot will be reconstructed and enlarged, resulting in improved storm water drainage, additional walkways and adding 100 parking spaces. On the west side of the Tony Noel facility, storm water drainage will be improved and concrete access pads will be installed. The project is on schedule to open the second week of August.

Construction Update – April 15, 2010
With initial site work completed, the contractor is starting the layout and foundation work on the new addition to the Tony Noel Agricultural Technology Applications Center. This 17,000-sq. ft. addition to the south end of the existing Noel building will allow the Diesel Technology program to expand, with space for instruction on large equipment, an equipment wash bay, tool storage, and a resource room. We anticipate the building addition will be completed by August.

Another new facility planned for the west side of campus, the Applied Technology Center (ATC), is currently in the design phase and is scheduled to be bid in June. The Engineering Science and Technology Department will expand and relocate some of its programs--Automotive, AYES, Ford Asset, Collision Repair, Industrial Technology, and Welding--to this 64,000-sq. ft. facility directly north of the Noel center. The facility is being designed for LEED certification (to meet the highest green building and performance measures). The State of Illinois is partially funding the project though the Capital Development Board. We anticipate the ATC will be completed by late fall 2011.

Architects have been selected and approved on our third large building project, the Student Services Center. This approx. 80,000-sq. ft. facility will allow Parkland to encompass all of its student services functions in one location, along with student lounge space and food service. The design and location of the new center will make it easier for incoming students and visitors to identify a starting point for information and registration. Also partially funded by the State, the facility will be designed to be LEED certified as well. Due to the size and scope of this project, an anticipated completion date has not been set; initial planning and programming will begin soon, however.

Part of the original planning for the Student Services Center included a new and improved Fitness Center. The College has been investigating the option of constructing this new Fitness Center adjacent to the gym as a separate project apart from the Student Services Center. This project would include remodeling the gymnasium’s lower level. Completing the project would give the College a “state of the art” athletic facility with space for Kinesiology, dance and aerobics, strength training, an indoor walking track, new locker rooms and team rooms, and coaches’ offices.

Several of our campus improvement projects are continuing as well:

Our wing remodeling project is moving forward. The B Wing remodeling has started with new accent paint colors. This summer, the flooring in the B Wing will be replaced. Trim work and improvements in the C wing should be completed in early summer. When work in the B and C wings is completed, work on the second and third floors of the X Wing will start.

Our project to re-roof the campus is moving ahead also. Work on the C Wing roof should be completed by the end of April. The contractors will be moving to the B Wing as soon as they finish work on the C Wing. Along with the roofing, the elevator upgrade project continues: The Library and B Wing elevators have been completed, and the contractor is working on the College Center and P Wing elevators. The L Wing and C Wing elevators are next to be upgraded. Both of these projects are scheduled for completion this summer.

If you would like to know more about any of our projects, please feel free to send an email or stop by the Physical Plant office. It’s an exciting time for Parkland College as we expand for the future.

This new construction is approximately 63,000 SF and is being partially funded by the State of Illinois through the Capital Development Board.  The Capital Development Board of Directors formally approved BLDD as the project architects, and contract negotiations are complete.   Schematic design will resume with actual building design to follow.  The intent is to have the facility ready for classes in fall of 2011.

Elevator Upgrades
Bids were received on September 1, with the Board approving Barber and DeAtley Construction of Urbana.  Initial electrical work began on September 28, 2009.  Actual upgrade work on the elevators will begin after fall semester finals are completed.  Substantial completion of all campus elevators is planned for summer of 2010.

Roof Repairs
Bids were received on July 16, with the Board approving Bennett and Brasseau Roofing of Romeoville.  Work commenced with the Parkland on Mattis facility on October 19, but substantial rain has hampered repair work and delayed completion.  The start of roof work on the main campus site has also been delayed due to rain.  Completion of entire Phase I portion of the roofing is planned for summer of 2010.

Wing Remodeling
The C wing is the first wing to be remodeled.  Floor covering has been installed in hallways, common areas and several classrooms.  Completion of floor covering is scheduled for winter break in December.  Accent wall color painting continues as class schedules allow.  Furniture options are currently being reviewed.  The B Wing is scheduled to be remodeled starting in May of 2010

Master Plan Phase II

Student Services Center
The College issued a Request for Qualifications for architectural firms for the design of the Student Services Center.  41 submittals were received from architectural firms.  Review of qualifications was completed by the Administrative team and a representative of the Capital Development Board.  The Administrative team recommended three firms, and the Board of Trustees interviewed those firms on October 26, 2009.  The Board is scheduled to make a selection at the November Board meeting.  The selected firm will then go on to the Capital Development Board for approval and negotiation of fees for design of the project.
